(Then and now I mentally consider giving the KDE desktop a try again, that's a repeating loop every few years. And sometimes, out of the blue and more or less around the same time, I receive a notification from their bug tracker, hinting me that one of these usability issues that got into my way literally a dozen of times a day, that wasn't easily or in a pleasant way to circumvent and that seems to have been caused by a mix of lack of attention to details and technical complexity to do it righ - or just "random design" and not using things at all in the first place - is still left open and being discussed more than five years later and I'm sure I'll stay where I am.)

(Reflecting: Time, timespans, duration, ones own age, technology, science, growth. Trying to track back to that very point in the floe where a certain kind of openness and optimism got lost. And trying to grasp why. Weird meditations for weekends.)

(Another customer on its way to fully embrace the usual offerings provided by huge cloud providers, struggling to come up with scenarios to justify that but nevertheless. The world seems split into different realities and perceptions and there are obvious worries and concerns and same as obvious challenges and limitations and sometimes it's just all about not being too surprised. So far, no one's been fired for that.)

Close to 10pm, all of a sudden and each of todays segments seems to have had its rather own pace, not necessarily to different on a measurable level but different from a perception and expectation point of view. Pondering services, code, ownership, fallacies of technology. And arguments in the fog, devoid of guardrails or orientation. And mental energy spent on pointless exercises, tiring and yet leading nowhere. Remote systems detached. The neighbours on the balcony are dimming their lights, engage in shy laughter, close their door and curtains. Rest and sleep, as a reasonable next step at least. Have a soft night wherever you are.

Every other week I read about some federated social network instance running into trouble due to some system outage, either following human error or technical failures on actual hardware or infrastructure issues on some provider. And again and again this feels sad, given we're in 2026, we have decentralized approaches such as dat or ipfs around, and still, just all too often, availability of full services, user data and the like depends on virtual machines with some sort of "local" storage operated by small groups or even individuals. Where did we fail to get architectures more robust and reliable than that? 😔

Software updates pending. Cautiously reading through changelogs, unsure whether this is just routine or begging for trouble. The office neighbourhood pigeons seem to have an opinion and maybe gut feeling does, too. 9am and indecisive.

(Code reviews, random modifications, exploring the possibilities of early morning attention. Also: Mail inboxes, slices of exchanges, not sure how one made it into these. Filter. Unsubscribe. Repeat. It feels both a bit bad and a bit more necessary.)

Almost 9am. Pending issues, differing approaches to resolution, some failing less obvious than others. Updates, side-effects, known sources of problems, known shortcomings in really addressing them. (Once headphones are down, the wind becomes more audible.)

Heading for 10am, another morning reshaping itself. Synchronous communication, asynchronous processing, feeling a bit lagging behind everything today. The clouds are bright but only those outside for now.
